HE IN DOVE-GRAY & she in white
Hand-in-hand, on down the road
Walked the way the rain had flowed
Passing sunset out of sight
Footfall heard but foot unseen
Shadow hid the summer-green
Where song had made the weather light;
She in white & he in dove-gray
From tower of brick, from garret-cell
Came to know those roadways well
To hear the things which pass that way
Which call on winds, in twilight-time
Shades of man, a pantomime
As have they not a word to say;
He in dove-gray & she in white
By city came to railway town
Before the walls came tumbling down
With joy these two beheld the sight
They but two were then made four
Vagrants knocked from door to door
Now fire burned into the night;
She in white & he in dove-gray
Built for them a home to fix
As they were four, but now were six
Seven, more -- but who can stay
No city found; on earth appear
Hand in hand, now passing fear
From dawn into an endless Day.
