Fire rains down on them / careful not to show the truth / but time will tell all

For just a moment, "the masters" blinked
As if by chance some augurs winked
"the bribes have worked", a wily rede
Sooth saying sufficient for souls in need?
Instead when clears the cloud from sight
What auspice vanish'd in that night?
But "all is well", it will be said
Lest many fearing flee instead--
And wisely quit, "while you're ahead."
