Our endless summer is over Did we notice the cooler winds Sudden as the cloud-cover As sudden weather descends; The sempiternal remanded The uncalled given a name Unreason as tho' commanded Remains unreason the same; So our endless summer is closing A beach at hurricane-time And we en-route supposing The weather would always be fine; The adversity we had prevented Preparing for difficult things Might have turned and repented From sight of spreading black wings; Yes our ceaseless summer is ended Shadow in summer is aid What shadow was then depended On when the shadow was made; A thunder-head of immenseness Of nothing but fury and size Against the great we're defenseless Who will not have truck with our lies; So instead I kneel 'mid the grass And pick the rambling red clover Perhaps this bloom is the last For our endless summer is over.
